LESS Surgery

LESS (Laparo-Endoscopic Single-Site) Surgery is the latest advancement in minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopic surgery can now be performed through one small incision made in the belly button to provide a near-scarless approach for a wide range of procedures in Gynecology.

Joseph Gauta, MD, FACOG was the first gynecologist in Southwest Florida to perform the revolutionary technology and has achieved tremendous results for his patients. Because of his surgical leadership and advanced skills, he now serves as an instructor for surgeons around the world teaching them how to safely and effectively perform the procedure on their own patients.

What makes this procedure so unique is that unlike the traditional laparoscopy or even DaVinci Robotic tools, which both require four to five separate incisions to access the abdomen, LESS surgery is performed entirely through one small incision located within the bellybutton.

Because the procedure is less invasive than traditional laparoscopic surgery, patient’s may experience less post-operative pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery, fewer post-surgical complications and no visible post-operative scars.

Dr Gauta, who is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the Society of Laparo-endoscopic Surgeons said, “This procedure may be a good alternative for many women in our region who are suffering with ovarian cysts, fibroids and other types of gynecological problems requiring surgical intervention or hysterectomy.”

The recipient of the prestigious Lewis I. Post Award for Surgical Excellence added, “Our team looks forward to helping women find the best possible solution to treat their problem and provide the care and support they deserve.”

If you look closely the picture above, you may be able to see a tiny red incision inside the belly button in this LESS patient who had surgery 3 weeks earlier. This will become invisible in the next few weeks.
